According to EyeCare America, the American Academy of Ophthalmology's Public
Service Foundation, one third of Americans over age 65 has a vision problem
caused by an eye disease.
EyeCare America states that seniors often don't
know they have a problem, either because they don't have any symptoms or
because they ignore the symptoms, believing that getting older is to blame.
Annual eye exams can help seniors maintain their eyesight. Through the
Seniors EyeCare Program offered by EyeCare America, eligible seniors can
obtain a free eye exam and free eye care treatment (some items are not
covered) for up to one year.
To be eligible for this free program, you must
- be a U.S. citizen or legal resident age 65 or older
- have gone at least three years without seeing an ophthalmologist and
- not be insured by an HMO or the VA.
To find out if you're eligible, call 800-222-3937 (24 hours a day, every day
of the year).
